MITIGATION CLEANUP

Slash and Mitigation Disposal in Teller County

Defensible-space work produces more material than people expect. Here is what a roll-off handles well, what it doesn't, and what the alternatives are.

15-yard from $350 · 20-yard from $380 · 2 tons included · delivery, pickup and disposal in the price

THE SHORT ANSWER

Some yard-cleanup material is accepted in a roll-off. Stumps, logs and bulky vegetation need approval before loading— they're dense and hard to load safely below the top rail.

For pure vegetation, a seasonal county or fire district slash programme, or renting a chipper, is often cheaper than hauling it. A container earns its place when the job also produces fencing, old structures, lumber and general junk.

Cut early and haul later. Green material weighs considerably more than the same volume after a few dry weeks, and cutting to length loads two to three times more efficiently.

THE PROBLEM

The cutting is the easy part

Anyone who has thinned around a house in Black Forest, Divide or Florissant knows the pattern. A weekend with a chainsaw produces a surprising amount of material. Then the pile sits there, because getting rid of it is a separate project nobody planned for.

Vegetation is awkward material. It is bulky, it is irregular, it does not compact the way construction debris does, and its weight swings enormously with moisture and wood density. Green material straight off the tree is far heavier than the same volume after a few dry weeks.

WHAT WORKS

Where a roll-off fits, and where it doesn't

Some yard-cleanup material is accepted in a Merit container. What consistently needs approval first is the heavy end: stumps, logs and bulky vegetation. This is not a formality. Those items are dense, they are hard to load below the top rail, and they can create a container that is not safely transportable.

A rough guide to how the material sorts:

Usually straightforward: smaller-diameter branches and brush, cut down to lengths that lie flat and load evenly, especially after they have dried out for a few weeks.

Needs a conversation first: stumps, root balls, full logs, large-diameter rounds, anything green and heavy, and any load where vegetation is most the volume.

Genuinely worth planning around: a large mitigation project. If you are clearing real acreage, chipping on site or a local slash program often beats hauling it away. Use a roll-off for the structures, fencing and junk that come out alongside the vegetation.

Cutting to length is the single highest-leverage thing you can do. Material that lies flat in the container loads two or three times more efficiently than material that bridges and leaves air underneath.

OTHER ROUTES

Slash programs and chipping

Teller County, El Paso County and several local fire districts have run seasonal slash collection or chipping programs. Firewise USA community groups often organise neighbourhood clean-up days too. These come and go, dates move, and the rules vary. Check with your county, your fire district or your neighbourhood association for what is running this season. Don't assume last year's schedule holds.

Where those programs work, they are usually the cheaper option for pure vegetation. Where they do not — wrong time of year, material outside their rules, or a volume beyond what they take — a container makes sense.

Renting a chipper for a weekend is the third route, and it turns a disposal problem into a mulch pile. Worth considering if you have somewhere to put the mulch.

PLANNING IT

If you're clearing a property this season

Cut early, haul later. Material that dries for several weeks weighs considerably less than material cut the day before pickup. On a job where weight is close to the line, that difference is real money.

Separate the vegetation from everything else. Mitigation projects usually turn up old fencing, a collapsed shed, scrap lumber and accumulated junk. That material is straightforward for a roll-off. Keeping it separate from the slash makes both problems easier.

Sort out access before delivery day. Mitigation properties are exactly the ones with long unpaved drives and low branches. Our placement and access guide covers what to check.

Tell us what you have. Describe the material, the rough volume, and how long it has been cut. That conversation tells us whether a container is the right tool for your job. We would rather say it isn't than deliver one we cannot take away.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before You Load

Call or text (719) 203-2529 to confirm your material before delivery.

Can I put slash and brush in a Merit dumpster?

Some yard-cleanup material is accepted. Stumps, logs and bulky vegetation need approval before loading, because they are dense and difficult to load safely below the top rail. Contact us with a description of the material and rough volume first.

Is a dumpster the cheapest way to handle mitigation slash?

Not always. For pure vegetation, a seasonal county or fire district slash program, or renting a chipper, is often cheaper. A container is usually the better tool when the job also produces fencing, old structures, lumber and general junk alongside the slash.

Does drying the material really matter?

Yes. Green vegetation is significantly heavier than the same volume after several weeks of drying. On a job near the 2-ton included allowance, cutting early and hauling later can be the difference between staying inside it and going over.

Do you serve Black Forest and Teller County for mitigation cleanup?

Yes, across El Paso and Teller counties. See the Black Forest, Divide and Florissant pages for local access notes. Deliveries more than 50 miles from our home base may incur a mileage fee.
